Ben bought me a Keurig for Christmas this year, because I can’t reach the regular coffee pot (which resides at the very back corner of our counter), and it’s pretty much my BFF at this point. I have issues with eating/drinking anything lukewarm . . . and my new BFF never fails to give me a burn-the-crap-outta-your-mouth steaming beverage.
Since the water is heated so much, I tried using the Keurig to make one of my Nutrisystem lunch items this week. Many of the products are done like ramen noodles, where you add hot water and steep and/or microwave. I never seem to catch the microwave before the food bubbles over and I have to clean half of my lunch off the microwave. (This is especially not fun when dieting and you can literally count how many extra spoonfuls you’re scraping into the garbage instead of shoveling in your face.)
So my BFF and my cup of Three Cheese Chicken pasta (one of my lunch faves!) hung out together while I prepped the rest of my lunch. I did run water through the machine first to help clear any coffee/tea/chai residue first, just in case. I also ended up throwing the pasta cup back in the microwave for a few seconds (for perfect molten lava temperature), but everything had cooked from the heat of the water from my coffee pot, with no mess. So if you’re okay with food that doesn’t burn your face off, you could skip the microwave step. Plus – the teacup amount of water couldn’t have been a more perfect match for the fill-line on the pasta cup.
I’m kind of in love with this concept (like you hadn’t noticed already from the entire post devoted to it.) but if you have a single-serve coffee pot at your workplace, it could really save you time on your lunch break, since you won’t be cleaning out the microwave every day.
And since I’m an overgrown 8-year-old who loves food experiments I think I’m going to try putting a bowl under the coffee pot to heat up a dinner entree next time.
